 7 reasons why you should be drinking more water

“You can take a horse to the water, but you cant make it drink it.”

Yep, I used to be the horse. As you know I dedicated myself to learning how to change my physique and training effectively. Countless times I read that ‘you need to be drinking two litres of water a day’ (‘Liter’ for the Americans reading this!)

I always knew that I should be drinking a lot of water, but did I do it? Hell no. I never used to drink litres of fluids in a day let alone water!

When I started to get serious about training (*serious face) I decided to give it a shot. My honest opinion is that I should have done it earlier.

Drinking water seems to be so underrated; I think this is due to the vast ranges of drinks available nowadays from Red Bullshit to Dr Pepper (does anyone even drink that anymore?!). Water makes up 55-75% of our total bodyweight and it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that its preeeetty important to us.

So… Here are 7 top reason to drink water regularly;

1) Sharpness!

7 reasons to drink water

New research reported at the recent British Psychological Society Annual Conference in London, found that college students who brought water with them into an exam scored higher marks than their counterparts who didn’t have water. Dehydration can cause brain fog. If you’re feeling sluggish, unfocused and downbeat you may need a glass or two of water!

2) Puffy Face and ‘Black Bags’ Under Your Eyes!

Top 7 reasons to drink water

If you struggle with a puffy face and sunken eyes with dark circles, this is a sign that your kidneys are in distress. You are not drinking enough water.

If the body is dehydrated, then the kidneys can’t function properly. The kidneys filter toxins, salts, and water from the bloodstream.  If the kidneys are overloaded, it can and will show in your face. Things like excessive booze or salty foods will always show in your face. You need to drink water regularly to make sure you give your kidneys the sufficient hydration to do their job.

3) Lower Body Fat!

Being dehydrated can make you gain weight! Your body will use all of the fluids available when it’s dehydrated. By pulling water out of the bloodstream, excess glucose will remain until it reaches the liver, where it’s supposed to be stored as glycogen for later use.

It is important to drink water so your liver can effectively metabolize body fat.  Do your organs a favor and keep them hydrated so they can do you a favor in return and work properly.

4) Get Rid of Those Cravings!

If your constantly feeling hungry or get those cravings for sugar. Drink a glass of water. Water makes you feel full and therefore acts as an appetite suppressant. So if you do get a craving, before you act upon it, try to drink a glass of water first.

5) Strength and Muscle!

Water consumption is essential for people who workout. The more water inside your muscles the bigger and more effective they are. So if you’re dehydrated, your muscle size suffers as well.

In this experiment scientists found out that people that were dehydrated performed significantly less overall reps than the ones that were hydrated (when given the same workout routine). The dehydrated subjects also found the exercises more difficult, and they needed longer for their heart rates to recover.

6) Pain Tolerance!

In this experiment, two groups of healthy males were put through a test. One group regularly consumed a clear beverage and the other group was dehydrated for 24 hours. The researchers then dunked the participant’s feet in ice cold water (0-3 degrees) for a maximum of four minutes.

They discovered that when the males were in the “dehydrated state,” their inclination to yank away their toes was far greater than when they were fully fueled with water! Now who doesn’t want a pain tolerance advantage over the next person?

7) Stop Headaches!

Scientists from the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands found that patients who suffered from severe headaches and migraines enjoyed an improved quality of life by drinking water regularly! Dehydration is the number one cause of headaches in a healthy individual.

Do you suffer from regular headaches? I used to always find myself with a headache coming on. I can tell you from experience that drinking plenty of water seriously reduces the amount of headaches one can get! So ditch the pesky paracetamols (did you know they mess your liver up?) and stay hydrated!

The Easiest Way to Make Sure You’re Drinking the Right Amount of Water;

  • Get some bottled water (2 Litre size)
  • Fill it up everyday and take it with you on your daily journey.
  • Make sure you finish the bottle before the end of the day.

Pretty simple right? This is the best way to ensure you are drinking enough water. It is simple, and allows you to go about your day not having to think about how much water you have left to drink. Just simply finish the bottle and you hit the daily water goal.

So there are my 7 Top Reasons Why You Should Be Drinking Water Regularly! So don’t be the horse, as hard as it can be, just drink the flippin water.
