Arnold Schwarzenegger, 6ft 2”, 235lbs and built like a tank. He won Mr. Universe at the age of 20 and went on to win Mr. Olympia not once, not twice but 7times! He is regarded as one of the greatest bodybuilders of all time.

 

Okay, that’s impressive but, what the heck can Arnold Schwarzenegger teach me?!

 

Some of you may be asking this question. What some people may not know is that Schwarzenegger was not just a mountain of muscle. He is actually a very wise man who has made success in every area he has decided to set his eyes (or biceps) on. Schwarzenegger is a foreign English speaker (something he has been constantly ridiculed for) and despite this fact  he ‘’only’’ went on to become the freaking governor of California! Schwarzenegger has had success as a;

 

  • Filmmaker
  • Businessman
  • Investor
  • Author
  • Philanthropist
  • Activist
  • Bodybuilder
  • Politician

 

To be able to accomplish success in such a vast range of professions. You can bet the ‘Austrian Oak’ knows a thing or two about winning ways.

 

Here are Schwarzenegger’s top 7 foundations that will bring you better success in training and life;

 

1. “You were born to win, but to be a winner; you must plan to win, prepare to win and expect to win”.

 

 

Schwarzenegger states that we were all born to win but, only a few people do what’s necessary to achieve their goals. The things that we need to do is plan, prepare and have self-belief. If you want to lose weight, build muscle, be a professional athlete, ‘take over the world Pinky’, whatever it is, you must plan, prepare and expect. If you have a lack of knowledge, then read some books or ask people around you that have been successful in what you want to achieve.

 

Take the time to sit down, make a solid plan and prepare yourself. If you want to build muscle, design a workout routine from your new knowledge you have gained. Write down the days you will train, what exercises you will do, what weight you will lift and what you will eat. Prepare your food the day before so you get the macronutrients that your body needs.

 

If you want to change your job then, learn some new skills, look for other openings and interviews and gain the knowledge that is necessary for the change.

 

Plan and make a to-do list so that your goal has a clear path leading to it. Don’t aimlessly walk around confused as a chameleon in a bag of skittles. To be a man on a mission, you need to have the mission details and objectives planned out.

 

2. “Strength does not come from winning; your struggles develop your strengths”.

 

 

When setting out to achieve goals no doubt there will be struggles along the way. What we have to remember is that strength comes from getting through these struggles. Ever heard the saying ‘what doesn’t kill you will only make you stronger?’ This I believe is 100% true. When we get through a struggle, we come out on the other end a lot stronger, wiser and tougher than before.

 

For example, if you want to become a professional boxer but you lose a fight. Don’t give up. Don’t class this as loss, class it as an experience gained to be better next time. Remember some of the greatest fighters have lost fights before e.g Muhammad Ali.

 

If you want to get a better job but you fail the interview, don’t give up. Prepare again, learn some interview techniques, better yourself and apply for the next chances that arise. If you want to lose some weight but are struggling to stay away from junk food, don’t give in. Try a new method and look for motivation. Everyone has struggles but the ones that make it through without quitting are the ones that find success.

 

3.“You can have results or excuses, not both”.

 

 

I know a lot about this one. I used every excuse under the sun when it came to me skipping a workout or missing a deadline. Once I stopped making excuses I started to get results.

 

Theirs many people that don’t realise the amount of excuses they give, for not completing things. If they miss a workout they will blame it on other people, “person X made me do such and such, so I don’t have the time to go”. We need to take 100% responsibility for our own lives and not play the ‘blame game’.

 

The blame game might seem like an easy way out but, it’s you that always loses. If you have dreams and goals these should be at the forefront of your mind and you should go for them aggressively,without letting anyone influence you.

 

Planning and preparing beforehand will make it harder to get distracted from your path. You can have results or all the excuses in the world. You cannot have both.

 

4.“If you don’t find the time, you don’t do the work, you don’t get the results”.

 

 

Finding the time is another excuse that people tend to use. I know our lives can be busy but, they are no different to the people who have reached their goals. People who really want something find the time to put the work in. They find a way around it.

 

Can’t find the time to go to go to the gym? Learn calisthenics and train at home. Can’t find the time to run after work to lose weight? Wake up an hour earlier and run in the morning.

 

There are always ways around problems. That’s why you need to plan and prepare so that you give yourself the best chance of achieving the goals you set. You need to do the work to get the results.

 

Whether it’s going to the gym to build muscle, practice mixed martial arts to get into the UFC or gain the relevant knowledge to change your job. Whatever your goal is, you need to put in the work or you won’t get the results. It’s that simple. As Bruce Lee said, “If you love life, don’t waste time, for time is what life is made of”.

 

5.“You can’t climb the ladder of success with hands in your pockets”.

 

 

If you want to achieve something and be successful you have to be ‘hands on’. You have to get up and have the motivation to work. If you want to lose weight, you can’t do it by sitting around.

 

You have to get your hands out of your pockets, prepare, plan and then most importantly take ACTION. Wanting something will not get it alone. You have to earn what you deserve. Unfortunately, we don’t have a bold genie that comes out of a lamp and gives us any 3 wishes (If you do, make sure you wish for more wishes 😉 ).

 

We have to get our hands out of our pockets and stop being bystanders. You don’t want to end up regretting that fact that you never even gave it a shot. Try your best to reach your goal.

 

6.“For me, life is continuously being hungry. The meaning of life is not simply to exist, to survive, but to move ahead, to go up, to achieve, to conquer”.

 

 

We should always keep learning. Have you ever heard the age old saying ‘you learn something new everyday?’  Learning is a lifetime experience, so keep bettering yourself and educating your mind. Staying hungry keep’s you progressing and stops you from becoming lazy.

 

Raise the bar on everything you do. If you reach your goal, take it even further. Don’t stop even when you make it to your goal. This type of further thinking is what kept Floyd Mayweather Jr on top of his game till the end of his career.

 

7. “If you want to turn a vision into a reality you have to give it 100% and never stop believing in your dreams”.

100% means just that.  Only know if you’re giving your goals 100% effort. If you’re not, what can you do better? What else can you learn?

 

Just say your goal is to build muscle. Are you giving it your best shot everytime you hit the weights? If not, why? Do you need more sleep?Are you not eating enough?

 

You should be asking yourself these questions.  The main point of this quote to me is to never give up. Once you decide it’s over then the fat lady sings as they say. It’s only ever over until you, yourself decide to quit.

 

Always have 100% self-belief even if the people around you don’t. It really doesn’t matter what others think you can do or can’t do, it only matters what you KNOW you can do. See how I said ‘KNOW’ and not ‘think’? This is because you should have the utmost belief in yourself and know you are capable of fulfilling your goals.

 

I bet thousands of people thought that Schwarzenegger was as nutty as a snickers bar when he said he wanted to become a politician, but that didn’t stop him. He believed in his goal, knew what he was capable of and look what happened, he became the governor of California.
